Car Sharing Education and Outreach Strategy

Image - Victoria Car Share Logo

Victoria's growing population is estimated to increase 22 per cent by 2026. Add this to concerns about air quality, climate change, health and sustainability and it becomes clear that increased alternative transportation infrastructure needs to be developed. Car-sharing is an integral part of the transition to an overall greener transportation reality because it helps people gradually lessen their dependence on the private automobile. Although car sharing isn't a new idea, its benefits tend to be known only to those already involved.

Victoria Car Share Co-op (VCSC) is a not-for-profit cooperative organization that promotes mobility without private car ownership. By having access to a vehicle when absolutely needed, people are more able to use alternative transportation options the rest of the time.. The price structure of VCSC encourages modest use of vehicles, and therefore promotes healthier and more sustainable transportation choices, such as transit, walking and cycling in conjunction with car-sharing.

What are they doing?

VCSC will deliver a targeted educational campaign to raise general public awareness about the benefits of car-sharing for all types of people. The goal is to increase both the numbers of people actively using car sharing and the available car-sharing infrastructure.
VCSC will also be working with housing developers, institutions and the 13 municipalities in the rapidly growing Capital Region to design a strategy to incorporate car sharing in new housing developments.
This strategy will greatly add to car sharing infrastructure over the next several years.

The project aims to:

  • Increase the number of people car sharing by increasing membership by 50 per cent;
  • Decrease the amount of GHG emissions from automobile use;
  • Improve car-sharing infrastructure in Victoria's Capital Region thus reducing the need for individuals, businesses, and non-profits to own a vehicle;
  • Increase the usage of all alternate modes of transportation; and,
  • Work with housing developers and municipalities to promote car sharing in new developments

What did the project accomplish?

Results will be posted upon receipt of a final report.
