The 2004 International Youth Summit on Sustainable Urban Transportation will take place from May 26 to 31 in Ottawa. It will bring together 80 Canadian youth aged 17 to 24 as well as participants from around the globe to discuss the importance of sustainable transportation in our communities. The goal of the summit is to send well-informed youth back to communities in Canada and around the world so they can encourage local action on sustainable transportation issues.
Before the summit, participants will meet with local groups to acquire a basic understanding of sustainable transportation issues in their community. The summit is comprised of four core sessions: teamwork and leadership, urban and transit planning, youth-targeted programs (such as trip-reduction programs and student passes) and community marketing. Elective sessions will include event and campaign planning, media relations and communications, and sustainable transportation and health. Technical tours of Ottawa will demonstrate the principles of urban and transportation planning.
Upon their return, participants will be invited by local environmental groups, municipal employees, transportation providers and previous Youth Summit participants to share what they learned and to encourage local actions!
Designed to link Canadian youth aged 17 to 24 with youth from around the world to discuss and discover the importance of sustainable transportation in their communities and to encourage participants to take action on sustainable transportation initiatives in their home communities, the conference attracted 80 participants from across Canada and international participants representing the US and Australia.
