Over 25% of Canadian greenhouse gas emissions come from transportation. Almost half of that comes from people driving their cars, vans, SUVs, trucks or motorcycles and this number is increasing.
Many regions, cities and towns are working to encourage fewer cars on the road and more people taking public transit, carpooling, cycling and walking.
To build on this momentum, the Urban Transportation Showcase Program (UTSP) funded eight "Showcase" projects in nine communities between 2003 and 2009. These projects provided Canadians with cleaner and/or more active transportation choices to get to work, shopping, outings, activities and back home while also helping to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.
Projects included improved transit services, easy connections between different kinds of transportation, biking/walking paths, nextbus transit information displays and other technologies, higher efficiency vehicles and community marketing and awareness campaigns.
These nine Canadian communities are leading by example — read on to learn the results!
