Rehabilitation and Restoration of the Trans-Canada Highway Route 1 (Newfoundland)

Federal Contribution: $24,000,000
Project Completion: 2009

The project was composed of twenty-one sub-components consisting of the rehabilitation of approximately 211 km of highway along 10 sections of Route 1. The rehabilitation involved 177 km of base and sub-base repair and 211 km of resurfacing. In addition, six bridges were rehabilitated and three other bridges, which had reached the end of their anticipated useful life, were rebuilt.

Torbay Bypass (St. John’s)

Federal Contribution: $5,000,000
Anticipated Project Completion: Fall 2011   

Involves the construction of a bypass west of Town of Torbay, in St. John’s urban area. The project is a combination of upgrading and bypassing the existing two-lane Route 20 through the Town of Torbay to alleviate traffic congestion through the Town and improve vehicular / pedestrian safety between the City of St. John’s and the Northeast Avalon region.

Conception Bay South Bypass

Funding Program: Canada Strategic Infrastructure Fund

Estimated Total Project Cost: $17,205,000
Federal Contribution: $6,509,500
Anticipated Project Completion: Fall 2011

The project will be a 5.6 km two-lane rural, arterial undivided highway for traffic on the Eastern Avalon Peninsula bypassing the town of Conception Bay South. It will serve to alleviate traffic congestion through the Town and improve vehicular safety.

Improvements to the National Highway System (Newfoundland)

Funding Program: Building Canada Fund

Applicant: Province of Newfoundland
Estimated Total Project Cost: $99,440,000
Federal Contribution: $45,200,000
Anticipated Project Completion: 2013

The overall project consists of 15 components being completed across the province including capacity improvements, bridge replacement, pavement rehabilitation, rutting repair as well as drainage and guiderail improvements. The components can be classified in three main types: ten renovations of existing road alignment, four bridge replacements and one major interchange modification.

Team Gushue Highway (Newfoundland)

Anticipated Project Completion: 2014

Providing an additional north-south arterial route connecting the Outer Ring Road to Pitts Memorial Drive, the Team Gushue Highway project represents the last remaining roadway component of an integrated transportation network designed to support and enhance economic activity and development.
