Twinning of sections of Highways 101 and 104

Funding Program: Canada Strategic Infrastructure Fund

Estimated Total Project Cost: $85,500,000
Federal Contribution: $30,500,000
Anticipated Project Completion: Completed Fall 2010

The project consists of extending the twinning of Highway 104 in Nova Scotia in New Glasgow to east of Old Pine Tree Road as well as to extend the twinning of Highway 101 from St. Croix to Three Miles Plain and from west of Falmouth to Avonport. The project will also provide at-grade intersections along Highway 101.

Improvements to the National Highway System – Highways 104 and 125

Anticipated Project Completion: 2013

The project consists of improvements to two stretches of highway in northern and eastern Nova Scotia: the twinning of Highway 104 from Pine Tree Road to Sutherlands River near New Glasgow, Nova Scotia, and the twinning of Highway 125 from Balls Creek to west of Coxheath Road near Sydney, Nova Scotia.

Highway 104 (Antigonish – Phase 1)

Federal Contribution: $25,000,000
Anticipated Project Completion: 2013

The project involves the construction of the first 7 kilometres of a new 15 kilometres controlled access, four-lane highway between Addington Forks Road (west of Exit 31) and Taylor Road (west of Exit 35) along the existing Highway 104 in Antigonish County.  Phase 1 will extend from west of Addington Forks Road to a point east of Antigonish beyond Beech Hill Road.

Highway 101 Passing Lanes (between Coldbrook and Kingston)

Funding Program: Building Canada Fund

Estimated Total Project Cost: $15,005,000
Federal Contribution: $6,750,000
Anticipated Project Completion: 2012

The project consists of increasing the capacity of Highway 101 between Exit 14 and Exit 17E through the addition of a westbound and of an eastbound passing lane at three locations over 31 kilometres between Coldbrook and Kingston.  The addition of passing lanes will improve highway safety and efficiency by providing vehicles with passing opportunities in a same-direction traffic lane.



South End Terminal Expansion (Port of Halifax)

Estimated Total Project Cost: $35,100,000
Federal Contribution: $17,500,000
Anticipated Project Completion: 2012

The project involves the extension of, and improvements to, the South End Container Terminal in order to expand terminal capacity and improve operations and traffic safety within the terminal area.  The project involves the extension of Pier C, the main Pier at the South End Container Terminal by approximately 80 metres, the realignment of Halterm Road entering the South End Terminal, and the design and construction of a new Halterm Truck Marshalling & Gate Complex.

Richmond Terminals Multipurpose Gateway Improvements (Port of Halifax)

The Halifax Port Authority Richmond Terminals Multipurpose Gateway Improvements Project will upgrade and expand the value-added cargo handling services capable of being conducted at the Richmond Terminals.

Northport Bridge

Anticipated Project Completion: 2011

This project involves the reconstruction of the Northport Bridge on Route 366 in Cumberland County, Nova Scotia. A detour is in place on existing roads for traffic while the bridge is removed and replaced.



Highway 125, Sydney River to Grand Lake Road

Funding Program: Building Canada Fund
Announcement: November 6, 2009
Applicant: Province of Nova Scotia
Estimated Total Project Cost: $33,550,000
Federal Contribution: $15,275,000
Anticipated Project Completion: 2012

The proposed project will twin Highway 125 over a distance of approximately eight kilometres, from the four-lane divided portion at Sydney River, Cape Breton Island, to its eastern terminus at Grand Lake Road.

Lower South River Bridge

Federal Contribution: $2,475,000
Anticipated Project Completion: 2012

This project involves the reconstruction of the Lower South River Bridge on the National Highway System located between Exit 34 and Exit 35 on Highway 104 in Antigonish County. The project consists of the construction of a replacement bridge adjacent to the existing bridge. This will require a short section of highway to be realigned and the removal of the existing bridge.



Heatherton Bridge

Funding Program: Building Canada Fund
Announcement: January 25, 2009
Applicant: Province of Nova Scotia
Estimated Total Project Cost: $4,000,000
Federal Contribution: $1,800,000
Anticipated Project Completion: 2013

This project involves the reconstruction of the Heatherton Bridge on the National Highway System, located on Highway 104 between Exit 35 and Exit 36 in Antigonish County. The project consists of the construction of a detour bridge adjacent to the existing bridge, the removal of the existing bridge and the construction of the replacement bridge.
