Funding programs are designed to help improve transit systems by means of financial contributions, as part of cost-sharing agreements, with provinces, territories, municipalities and the private sector.
Employees of the Transportation Infrastructure Programs’ transit group manage transit projects across Canada under the following programs and initiatives:
Building Canada Fund (BCF) – $8.8 Billion, 2007-2014
The Building Canada Fund provides strategic funding to infrastructure projects managed by Canadian provinces, territories and municipalities. This seven-year plan will have a real and significant impact on the everyday lives of Canadians, while supporting the nation's priorities – a stronger economy, cleaner environment and better communities. Infrastructure Canada is responsible for the overall management of the fund, and Transport Canada implements transportation projects selected to receive funding.
Public transit is one of five national funding priorities for the BCF, which will promote public transit infrastructure investments designed to improve mobility, reduce travel times, increase safety and efficiency, expand public access and ridership, reduce the growth of greenhouse gases and other emissions, and contribute to sustainable municipal development and land-use planning.

Canada Strategic Infrastructure Fund (CSIF) – $4 Billion, 2001-2013
The Canada Strategic Infrastructure Fund is directed to projects of major federal and regional significance in areas that are vital to sustaining economic growth and enhancing the quality of life of Canadians. Infrastructure Canada is responsible for the overall management of the program, and Transport Canada implements transportation projects selected to receive funding.
Transit projects are eligible for funding under the CSIF either through the Local Transportation Infrastructure category or the Sustainable Urban Growth category. The Local Transportation Infrastructure category targets investments in projects made to facilitate the safe and efficient movement of goods and people, ease congestion, and reduce the emission of greenhouse gases and airborne pollutants. The Sustainable Urban Growth category targets investments in urban transportation projects that will: reduce congestion, energy use and greenhouse gases; improve safety and environmental impacts; promote social, mobility and equity goals; and support tourism and economic development in urban areas.
