Safe, sustainable and efficient public transit systems are essential to Canada’s economy, environment and quality of life. Although urban transit infrastructure is a shared municipal and provincial/territorial responsibility, the Government of Canada recognizes that making urban transportation more sustainable and efficient is a significant challenge that requires the cooperation of all levels of government. As such, the federal government makes considerable investments in urban transit across Canada, through a number of existing cost-sharing infrastructure programs.
The Transportation Infrastructure Programs Directorate’s transit group manages contribution agreements for transit projects receiving funding under major capital infrastructure programs such as the $4 billion Canada Strategic Infrastructure Fund and the $8.8 billion Building Canada Fund. Investments in urban transportation help ensure the efficient movement of goods and people, thereby strengthening the economy; reducing traffic congestion, greenhouse gas emissions and air pollution; and improving the quality of life of Canadians.
The Government of Canada works closely with our provincial, territorial and municipal partners to help them meet their transit infrastructure needs, while respecting jurisdictional responsibilities.
