Located in the middle of the Gulf St. Lawrence, far from the mainland and major urban centres, the Îles-de-la-Madeleine Airport provides an essential air link with the rest of Quebec and with the Maritimes year-round.
The Îles-de-la Madeleine Airport is located on Île de Havre-aux-Maisons (House Harbour Island), some six kilometers frome the village of Cap-aux-Meules (Grindstone).
The Îles-de-la-Madeleine Airport is a major player in local socio-economic development. In addition to providing islanders with year round transportation and supply services, it is a pillar of local economy, based largely on fishing (lobster, crab, mackerel, etc.) and tourism.
The airport ships a considerable share of the Islands' seafood production to the mainland, including 80 000 kg of lobster per year. It also handles a significant proportion of the tourist traffic to the Magdalens, as the Islands become an ever more popular destination.
