Natashquan Airport

Between 1950 and 1954, an airstrip 4 500 by 100 feet was constructed at Natashquan, and aircraft began to use it in October 1954. The sand surface, however, was not satisfactory and it had to be covered with gravel two years later.

In October 1971, Transport ministery granted $ 6 500 to the municipality for runway and ramp improvements, and a trailer was set up as a tempory terminal until the new building, put up by Transport, was opened in 1973.

The municipality continued to press Transport for runway improvements.  In the fall of 1975, $ 90 000 was made available by Transport for a contract to re-gravel the runway and put it in shape for use by Northern Wings HS-748 aircraft. It was paved in 1979 and is now 1372 by 30 metres.

Ownership of the airport was transferred to Transport on December 15, 1965. It is operated by Natashquan with an operating subsidy from Transport Canada, first provided in 1970.
