Transport Canada promotes efficient marine transportation and safe, secure and sustainable marine practices; oversees marine infrastructure; regulates the safe transportation of dangerous goods by water; and helps protect the marine environment.
As stipulated in Part 2 of the Canada Shipping Act, Transport Canada is responsible for registering Canadian vessels upon request from their owners. CSA 2001 requires that all non pleasure crafts to be duly registred.
Ship Registration consists of establishing its identity and providing it with a title against which a ship's mortage or some other necessity may be obtained and the right to navigate in international waters. Boats of 15 tons or less, registred under the Small commercial vessels Register are not allowed to morgage.
