Road and Motor Vehicle Safety Road and Motor Vehicle Safety

Did you know that more people have died on Canada's roads in the last 50 years than the number of Canadians killed in two world wars? In fact, the numbers tell us that on average, eight Canadians die in road crashes every day. Many more are seriously hurt.

Road Safety Directorate wants to make Canada's roads the safest in the world. That's why we work to reduce the number of deaths, injuries, damage to property and the environment as well as impacts on the economy such as days off work and higher insurance rates, that result from motor vehicle use in Canada.

Road safety is a shared responsibility. That is why, governed by the Canada Motor Vehicle Safety Act, we work with industry, community groups and government partners to set national safety standards for the design and construction of safe vehicles and safe roads, as well as promote safe drivers and passengers.
