As a parent, or as someone who cares for or transports children, you need to learn about the rules in your area for transporting children as safely as possible, either in your own or someone else's car or on a school bus. You need to find out about the different child seats available and which ones are right for your child. Depending on what stage your child has reached, you need to learn how to install the infant seat, child seat or booster cushion correctly in your vehicle. And you must then secure your child correctly in that seat.
Transport Canada sets and enforces the safety standards required for child car seats and for new and imported vehicles. It does research to support the improvement of these standards and shares the results with industry and the international regulatory and research communities. It educates the public by publishing brochures and maintaining a web site on road safety issues.
The provincial and territorial governments regulate vehicle drivers and vehicle use through their highway traffic acts. They also regulate driver licensing and seat belt and child seat use. Along with the provinces and territories, municipalities enforce child seat use laws through their local police services.
Representatives from the various levels of government as well as other child safety groups meet regularly to share research findings, and plan education and enforcement campaigns.
