Hooked on Road Safety

Global Road Safety, United Nations and Canada

Following the 2005 UN resolution A/60/5 on improving global road safety, a Canadian multi-sectoral workshop on global road safety was held in Ottawa. The goal was to find ways for Canada to play a role in road safety at the national and international levels.

April 23-29, 2007 was the first United Nations' Global Road Safety Week, with the theme “young road users” Why? Because too many youth are victims of road traffic injuries and deaths. During the week, events to raise awareness and promote road safety were held around the world. They included the World Youth Assembly for Road Safety and the Canadian Road Safety Youth Conference.

On March 31, 2008, the United Nations General Assembly in New York approved a resolution on global road safety which among other things welcomes the offer of the Government of the Russian Federation to host and provide necessary financial support for the First Global High Level (Ministerial) Conference on Road Safety in 2009 and encourages member states to strengthen their commitment to road safety including by observing the World Day of Remembrance for Road Traffic Victims on the third Sunday of November of every year. The resolution was sponsored by Oman and co-sponsored by about 90 other member states, including Canada.
