Transport ferroviaire - Ontario

Rail Transportation in Ontario is essential to ensuring the region’s continued economic growth and the safe movement of people and goods. The region’s vast network of railways covers thousands of kilometres and employs many thousands of people.

Transport Canada regulates rail transportation in Canada under the Railway Safety Act and the Transportation of Dangerous Goods Act to insure the safety of passengers, cargo, the public, and the environment.

Federally regulated railways in Ontario include CP Rail, CN Rail and Rail America. Additionally, Transport Canada also retains jurisdiction over most of the provincial railways under the Ontario Provincial Railways Act making them subject to the same federal regulatory and safety requirements.

Transport Canada plays a critical role in following up on incidents, accidents, and complaints within the rail industry as they pertain to the Railway Safety Act and all related regulations.

In Ontario, Transport Canada’s Surface Branch, is responsible for implementing and directing all programs related to both the Railway Safety Act and the Transportation of Dangerous Goods Act, and insures that all safety standards and federal rail regulations are met.

Ontario Region’s Surface Branch is divided into four components:

  1. Operations Group
  2. Equipment Group
  3. Engineering Group
  4. Transportation of Dangerous Goods

Ontario Region Rail Transportation Surface Branch is located at:

4900 Yonge St. 3rd fl.
North York, Ontario
M2N 6A5
