Electronic commerce, or e-commerce, can be defined as the buying and selling of goods and services through electronic means such as the Internet, email, fax and Electronic Data Interchange (EDI). E-commerce is an important facet of the broader term “e-business,” which refers to automating business processes of all types through electronic means.

Transport Canada and Industry Canada have joined forces with the Canadian Trucking Alliance to commission this E-Commerce and the Canadian Trucking Industry study. This undertaking is an excellent example of the federal government working in partnership with the private sector to foster Canada’s economic vitality.  The study was completed in two phases: a detailed Needs Assessment Report, and the creation of an information package (Toolkit and Handbook) tailored to the Canadian trucking context. The overall goal of this study is to raise awareness of e-commerce and increase its adoption in the Canadian trucking industry.
