The Pembina Institute for Appropriate Development is an independent, citizen-based think tank, an activist public interest organization, and a non-profit consulting group.
Pembina is proposing that Calgary's light rail transit (LRT) system be converted to utilize wind energy thus avoiding toxic pollutants such as SO2 and NOx. To accomplish this goal Pembina is creating partnerships to build support for the use of green power sources for Calgary's LRT.
Replacing the current system with wind generated energy will have positive impacts on the environment. Not only would passengers eliminate their personal impact on the environment by the reduced use of automobiles, Calgary would also avoid the significant emissions associated with coal generated electricity used by the LRT. A wind powered LRT would eliminate approximately 1,500 kg of emissions per commuter per year.
First phase of project will be completed by March 31, 2002.
