Trucks and pick-up trucks with a GVWR inferior or equal to 4536 kg (10,000 lbs) LESS THAN FIFTEEN (15) YEARS OLD
All trucks with GVWR of 4536 kg or less manufactured BEFORE September 1, 2007 are admissible
For trucks with GVWR of 4536 kg or less manufactured AFTER September 1, 2007, refer to Section 12
All vehicles that have undergone alterations other than typical repairs are inadmissible

Trucks with a GVWR greater than 4536 kg (10,000 lbs) LESS THAN FIFTEEN (15) YEARS OLD
All trucks with a GVWR greater than 4536 kg (10,000 lbs) are admissible
All vehicles that have undergone alterations other than typical repairs are inadmissible

Trailers LESS THAN FIFTEEN (15) YEARS OLD, including:
utility trailers,
enclosed cargo trailers,
low-chassis trailers,
air braked trailers,
travel trailers,
fifth wheel trailers,
horses/stock trailers,
boat trailers,
car dollies,
portable air compressors,
log splitters,
wood chippers,
etc.
All trailers manufactured BEFORE September 1, 2007 are admissible
All trailers manufactured AFTER September 1, 2007 with GVWR of 4536 kg or less are admissible
For trailers manufactured AFTER September 1, 2007 with a GVWR greater than 4536 kg, refer to Section 11 for additional requirements unless the trailer belongs to following list of EXEMPTIONS WHICH ARE ADMISSIBLE INTO CANADA:
(a) a pole trailer, a pulpwood trailer, a wheels back trailer or a trailer designed to be used as temporary living quarters (i.e. travel / RV trailer);
(b) a low-chassis trailer (i.e. horse / stock trailer, boat trailer); and
(c) a trailer designed to interact with, or having, work-performing equipment located in or moving through the area that would be occupied by a horizontal member that meets the configuration requirements specified in the standard.

Trailers WITHOUT a valid legible 17-character Vehicle Identifier Number (VIN) are inadmissible
Trailers WITHOUT a valid U.S. manufacturing statement of compliance label or letter from the manufacturer are inadmissible
Home-built trailers being imported by someone OTHER than the original builder are inadmissible
All trailers that have undergone alterations other than typical repairs are inadmissible

There are numerous restrictions on these types of vehicles. Please refer to one of the sections 5.1 to 5.6 in the table of contents specific to the vehicle category of interest.
Wrecked vehicles purchased in the Unites States declared as "complete vehicles"
Admissible "as complete vehicles" are:
Vehicles listed as admissible on the admissibility list accompanied with a U.S. vehicle "Certificate of title" showing:

REBUILDABLE,
REBUILT,
REPAIRABLE,

or other equivalent
Branding information is verified by the RIV through U.S. databases verification at importation. Salvage brands are further reported to all provincial and territorial licensing jurisdictions in Canada, even if the vehicle title provided at importation indicated otherwise. In certain circumstances, this can severely limit your ability to get the vehicle licensed and insured in Canada when the branding information is inconsistent.
Inadmissible "as complete vehicles" are:

Vehicle with a brand of salvage/flood are considered as non-repairable by all licensing jurisdictions in Canada. These vehicles cannot be legally licensed and can only be imported as "DISASSEMBLY FOR PARTS ONLY".

Importer must submit a valid "Certificate of Title" from a U.S. State motor vehicle licensing authority when entering Canada.

Once a vehicle is declared for "parts only" at importation, it is given a non-repairable status. The RIV reports the non-repairable status to all provincial and territorial licensing jurisdictions in Canada. That status cannot be reversed and the vehicle can never be licensed in Canada.
Inadmissible as "DISASSEMBLY FOR PARTS ONLY" are:

IMPORTANT : Once the vehicle's intended use is declared as "DISASSEMBLY FOR PARTS ONLY" at importation, the status cannot be modified and the vehicle is no longer eligible for licensing in Canada.
The Form-3 declaration must be completed when importing a vehicle as "disassembly for parts only". The status is final and cannot be modified once completed.
Kit Cars LESS THAN FIFTEEN (15) YEARS OLD (assembled or unassembled)

Competition Vehicles
All models
Competition Vehicles are designed for use exclusively in closed-course competition. These vehicles are exempt from the RIV program provided they: bear a label affixed by the manufacturer stating, in both official languages, that the vehicle is a competition vehicle and is for use exclusively in closed-course competition, or is accompanied by a signed declaration clearly indicating that the vehicle is a competition vehicle and is for use exclusively in closed-course competition. This signed declaration MUST come from a racing sanctioning body, i.e. FIA, AMA, CART, etc.
