Take a drone pilot online exam: Small Basic Exam
Fee: $10, additional attempts have the same fee.
About the online exams
Exams are now open. We strongly recommend that you attend a drone flight school before attempting the exam.
Why? The exam covers a lot of new rules you may not know yet.
Online exam questions are based on the Knowledge Requirements for Pilots of Remotely Piloted Aircraft Systems. However, this document is not a study guide. We recommend taking a course with a drone flight school to prepare for your online exam.
If you fail the online exam, you must wait 24 hours before trying again. You can re-take it as many times as you wish.
Small Basic Exam
You must pass this exam to get your Pilot Certificate – Basic Operations.
The Small Basic Exam features 35 multiple choice questions. You have 90 minutes to complete the exam. A score of 65% or higher is considered a pass.
How long it will take to get your results
You are given the results of your online exam right after it finishes through the Drone Management Portal.
After you pass your online exam
You will have the option to print your Pilot Certificate – Basic Operations after passing the exam. You must have your Pilot Certificate – Basic Operations on hand when flying your drone.
You will need to keep your knowledge up to date. If you let your knowledge level lapse for more than 2 years, we may invalidate your results.
You must keep proof on you that you’ve retained your knowledge whenever you fly. Standard 921.04 – Recency Requirements outlines acceptable activities, including:
- attending a safety seminar endorsed by Transport Canada Civil Aviation
- completing a recurrent drone training program
- completing a self-paced study program endorsed by Transport Canada Civil Aviation
