Issue:

Transport Canada and Elfe Juvenile Products (“Elfe”) are informing the public of a non-compliance of the Chicco KeyFit 30 infant car seat made between December 30th, 2013 and May 21st, 2018. Specifically, Transport Canada testing found that the infant seat did not meet the dynamic requirements for chest acceleration of the Motor Vehicle Restraint Systems and Booster Seats Safety Regulations.

Safety Risk:

Regulations set forth by Transport Canada require car seats to meet all compliance requirements when subjected to a dynamic test, including measures and limits for chest acceleration. In testing performed by Transport Canada, the infant car seat in question does not meet the dynamic test requirements which could increase the risk of injury in the event of a collision.

Transport Canada and Elfe have no reported incidents related to excessive chest acceleration with the use of the KeyFit 30 Infant Child Restraint in Canada. The issue does not affect the KeyFit 30 in the United States due to differences in the harness configuration.

Company Actions:

Transport Canada’s compliance testing program uncovered the non-compliance condition. Upon being made aware of the issue, Elfe and Artsana S.P.A. began investigating the reported non-compliance and developed a retrofit kit that would bring the seat into compliance with the dynamic requirements of the Motor Vehicle Restraint Systems and Booster Seats Safety Regulations.

Elfe will notify all registered consumers and retailers who own an affected product of the issue and provide them with a retrofit kit and instructions. Elfe will also make these retrofit kits available to consumers who own an affected product starting August 10, 2018.

Consumer Recourse:

The affected seats should not be returned to retailers or the company. Consumers must register online or call customer care department (see ‘consumer contact’ above) to receive a repair kit. To register online, please visit the following link: www.chicco.ca/en/safety-advisories.

Elfe recommends that consumers continue to use their car seat using the universal anchorage system (UAS), lap only portion of the vehicle seat, or without the base until they receive a retrofit kit.
