Raytheon Aircraft Company - Service Difficulty Alert

Beech 1900D Windshield Ground Wire

Transport Canada has recently learned through the Service Difficulty Reporting (SDR) program of an inflight incident involving a Raytheon Beechcraft 1900D.

In cruise flight at FL210, the flight crew detected an odor followed by smoke emanating from the dashboard area. After the crew emergency procedures were carried out, the windshield heat was selected "off " and the smoke dissipated. An uneventful priority landing was completed.

Maintenance personnel inspected the aircraft and discovered the right windshield ground wire, P/N MS 250852BB5, had contacted the dashboard eyebrow and the heat had caused it to smolder. The ground wire was replaced and routed to ensure that no contact can be made with the glare shield. The SDR submitter carried out a fleet-wide inspection for similar defects and none were discovered.

Transport Canada highly recommends owners and operators of Beech 1900D aircraft inspect the left and right windshield ground wire installations to ensure adequate clearance between the glare shield and the ground wire (Photo). The FAA has been notified of this discrepancy.

Any further defects or occurrences should be reported to Transport Canada, Continuing Airworthiness, Ottawa, via the Service Difficulty Reporting (SDR) program.

For further information, contact a Transport Canada Centre, or Mr. Jean Grenier, Continuing Airworthiness, Ottawa, telephone 613 952-4343, facsimile 613 996-9178 or e-mail grenije@tc.gc.ca.
