Marine Consultation on updating the Vessel Operation Restriction Regulations (2021 submission)

The Vessel Operation Restriction Regulations explain the rules for vessels that navigate or operate in some Canadian waters.

Each year, Transport Canada receives applications from local authorities to create or update navigation restrictions in order to make navigation safer, to protect the environment and to protect the public interest.

We use this yearly process to update the regulations and make other small changes.

We’re holding this consultation to collect feedback from key stakeholders, including Indigenous communities, about these policy changes.

Transport Canada is reviewing the 2015 Rail Safety Management System Regulations to see how we can strengthen SMS performance to improve rail safety. T The review will provide opportunities to identify issues that need to be addressed for oversight or regulatory amendments. Best practices, oversight approaches, and other issues identified will also be added to the extent possible. There will be several opportunities to provide comments. The first step is to get feedback from stakeholders and the public on the strengths and weaknesses of the current system. The Canadian General Standards Board (CGSB) has released the draft of Safety Standard CAN/CGSB-43.149 for a 60-day consultation period. Safety standard CAN/CGSB-43.149 sets out the requirements for designing, manufacturing, maintaining, qualifying, inspecting, marking, selecting, and using ton containers.
